Male Calabar Burrowing Python

Calabar Pythons dubbed the “world’s toughest snake” due to their incredibly thick skin are endemic to the Rain forests of Central and West Africa. They are a burrowing species requiring deep loose substrate to satisfy their fossorial tendencies. In the wild, they are known to infiltrate rodent nests and consume entire litters of young translating to captive kept individuals preferring smaller prey and being capable of taking multiple prey items under the right conditions. Instead of biting, Calabar Pythons use their tail, which has evolved to look nearly identical to their head, as a decoy while coiling tightly around their more vulnerable head. Maxing out at 39 inches they are extremely easy to handle and their laid-back temperament make them fascinating and docile pets.
